Between Night Update

Well, the film biz in Portland is a little slow right now, so I did not have enough funds to make it to Hartford this weekend. But if you are in Connecticut and looking for something to do, the Hartford International Film Festival is happening as I type. Check out their site at:
http://www.capitolcinemacollective.org
and a quick plug - my film, Between Night, is playing at 6:45 this evening. If anyone out there reading happens to go to the festival, I'd love to hear about it, the venues, the films, etc.

The writing continues on the feature. It is an interesting experience, but it's working out great. I've never had much success writing with people. It's always been that I've looked for help after having developed the script. This time, though, Matt and I are in the trenches together. Since he is in Brooklyn and I'm in Portland, we've been working on it via email. Throwing ideas and questions back and forth and from these random lumps of clay, we've begun to sculpt out - in my humble opinion - a great script, with hopes to have a solid draft by the holidays. From that, we will be able to rework the drafts while serious pre-production will begin. I always like preproduction, so I am looking forward to the process once again. We will be scouting in New York and on Orcas Island in Washington State's San Juan Islands. If anyone out there has some connections in either of these places and wants to get involved or just recommend some ideas, please let me know!

Cheers!

Between Night

Between Night, the film I wrote and directed for my thesis at Boston University was recently selected for the Hartford International Film Festival! So thank you all, once again, to those who helped me to realize this film! It will hopefully provide for some chances to network for the next film, though I don't think I will be able to attend the festival. I am working on updating my site, scottballardfilms.com with a filmography of the films I've shot &/or directed. I've also sent Between Night to several new festivals this week as well - all found on Without A Box. Matt and I are continuing to work out the script for the feature film and it is looking sharp.

New Site!

Howdy all,

I have just completed a new website to detail the development of the next film! You can see this at ScottBallardsNextFilm.com I will be updating it will all the pertinent information as it develops. Also, I have a card set for sale at my screenprinting site twoguitars.etsy.com, of which all proceeds from the sale of this card set will go to support the film! Check out the direct link at http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php=16584485, they are the camera cards.

The script is getting ever-closer to a solid state. I am working on writing the film with Matt Lawrence, you can check his site out at www.dynamattproductions.com where you can see photos, films and his resume.

Currently, the producing tasks are being tackled by Matt Lawrence, David Rosenblum and me. Fundraising is always the first and probably the last battle of making a movie, so we are underway on that front. If anyone out there has any connections to film or moviemaking in the Northwest or elsewhere, has any information that might help the cause, or just knows a great place to find money, don't be afraid to write in, it'd be greatly appreciated!

This weeks goal are to continue working on the script, roughly itemize equipment and locations that we currently know will be needed, and begin work on a rough budget detailing the costs. As a starting point, we are setting our sites at $50,000. This is more money that I've ever had for a film or most things, but I believe will help us in making a successful feature that we can launch into the world!

I am also continually sending my thesis film Between Night out to festivals all over the world. You can see photos from this shoot by following my flickr link.

Until next time!

New Projects

I have not updated my blog recently, but will now  begin again. Since getting my own website up (scottballardfilms.com), I will devote this blog to upcoming projects. As you might guess, there is an upcoming project! This will be a feature debut and will be the coordinated effort of my colleagues and I. We will be looking to film this next summer in Washington State. Over the next few weeks, I will be transforming this blog into a detailed account about this projects development. It will include our business plan, budget, summary, and the current cast and crew involved in the project already. Please stay tuned!

The Projects Continue....

I have been posting new pictures from my production at my flickr site (www.flickr.com/scottballardfilms). I've also added a slideshow to the right which shows many of the productions stills taken during filming. Adam is at work editing the film - I saw some of it last night and am excited to see the progress. I am still looking for a musician to help out with the soundtrack - jazz trumpet a la Chet Baker.

Other projects abound. I have new cards up on my site at www.twoguitars.etsy.com and several more designs waiting until I have more time! I will be in the Poppytalk Handmade Online Market this month a great place to see some handmade creations.

My photography is now on display at Cafe Nation in Brighton, MA. It will reside there until the end of April - freeing up some much needed space in the apartment for a month.

I will be the cinematographer on my colleague's film this week. Pedro Pontoni is directing his thesis film - we'll be filming at the Super 88 grocery store. It's a colorful place and will look great on film!

I have now started loading pictures on my flickr account. You can see them at www.flickr.com/photos/scottballardfilms. Almost all of these pictures were taken by my sister Angie during the production.

My editor, Adam, is currently working on syncing up all the sound and soon will be able to begin the editing process. Meanwhile, I am looking for someone to help me with the jazz score I would like for the movie. I am keeping busy maintaining my two sites www.twoguitars.etsy.com and suchandsuch.etsy.com where I sell my wares to help fund the next project. Two Guitars features my handmade screenprinted (Gocco) art cards and Such and Such features my photography.

Cheers,
Scott

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog featuring updates on my adventures and misadventures in the medium of film. I have just recently completed principle photography on my thesis project for Boston University. Thanks to my dedicated and exhausted crew, the film came off beautifully and is now in the process of being edited. The project is tentatively titled "Between Night" and was shot in color on Super 16mm. We burned through 19 rolls of film for what will be about a 15 minute film, but came away with some beautiful shots. Above is one of the main street corners we used in the film. The film was shot entirely in my hometown of Bellingham, WA.

In upcoming posts, I will detail the process and progress of this project as well as other's which are in the works. I will be adding pictures and video as well. I hope you enjoy-
Cheers.
